Rena Urso enjoys a flourishing career as a freelance orchestral and chamber musician all over California. In addition to being on the faculty at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University Long Beach and California State University Stanislaus, she is the Second Flutist of the Oakland Symphony and the Oregon Coast Music Festival Orchestra. She previously held Piccolo positions and toured extensively with the New York City Opera National Company and San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theater.
Rena performs frequently with many of the orchestras throughout California including the San Francisco Opera, Pacific Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Monterey, Marin, Santa Rosa, Berkeley, Modesto, and California Symphonies, Carmel Bach Festival, and Festival Mozaic. She has also performed with the Seattle Symphony, American Ballet Theater, Bolshoi Ballet, Mark Morris Dance Group, Hawaii Symphony, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
A versatile musician who has recorded for video games, television, radio, and film, Rena has also performed extensively with the National Tours of Wicked and Phantom of the Opera.
As a Licensed Body Mapping Educator, Rena presents workshops and masterclasses all over the world, as well as the course she created at CSULB, Body Mapping for the Performing Artist. Her popular monthly column in The Flute View covers a myriad of topics related to injury prevention and musician wellness. Rena will be completing her 200-hour RYT yoga teacher certification and meditation teacher certification in Summer 2021.
During the unusual time of COVID, Rena participated in many virtual performance and teaching collaborations including a new book for the piccolo, "Practice with the Experts; Piccolo Edition," the wildly popular weekly workshops, Practice the Piccolo, and a regular occurring workshop with fellow LBME Amy Likar, "Crafting the Beautiful Etude." This is a workshop focusing on use of Self as it applies to the study and performance of standard flute etudes. This fall, the dynamic new online International Piccolo Academy will launch. This extraordinary new resource will contain performance and instructional videos as well as a variety of other helpful tools by some of the finest piccolo players and pedagogues from all over the world. Rena is delighted to be a part of exciting and unique adventure for the piccolo, as a teaching and performing artist, with contributions focusing on Body Mapping for piccolo players. An active member of the National Flute Association, Rena has served as an adjudicator for various competitions and performed at many of the annual conventions including those in Chicago, Las Vegas, Nashville, Anaheim, Minneapolis, Orlando, as well as next August in Dallas.
Rena is a Course Coordinator for California State University Summer Arts with her biennial flute course, The Complete 21st Century Flutist, taking place again in July 2021 at California State University Fresno. She has been a guest artist at the Iowa Flute and Piccolo Intensive summer courses and is a frequent guest artist at the International Piccolo Festival in Grado, Italy.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Rena received her Bachelor of Music from Wayne State University, and her Master of Music with honors from California State University Long Beach. She is extraordinarily grateful for her mentors; Robert Patrick, Clement Barone Jr., John Barcellona, Anne Zentner, and her father, Santo Urso.

Bridget Sweet is Associate Professor of Music Education at University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. After completing her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education at Western Michigan University, Dr. Sweet enjoyed a successful tenure as a middle school choir teacher for nearly ten years. Her interests in adolescent music education intensified during her Masters and Doctoral programs in Music Education at Michigan State University, which contributed to her research focused on characteristics of effective and exemplary middle-level music teachers. Prior to her work at the University of Illinois, Dr. Sweet was Assistant Professor of Music Education at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. At the University of Illinois, Dr. Sweet teaches secondary music education pedagogy, including choral methods and literature; graduate courses in music education; and a course focused on the development of healthy practices for all musicians. She is a Licensed Body Mapping Educator through the Association for Body Mapping Education.
Dr. Sweet continues to work extensively with adolescent singers as a teacher, clinician, and conductor; she has been invited to conduct middle and high school All-State Choirs and Honors Choirs in many states. Dr. Sweet wrote the books Growing Musicians: Teaching Music in Middle School and Beyond (2016, Oxford University Press) and Thinking Outside the Voice Box: Adolescent Voice Change in Music Education (2020, Oxford University Press). Dr. Sweet’s research interests include middle level choral music education, [assigned at birth] female and male adolescent voice change, musician health and wellness, intersections of LGBTQ+ topics and the music classroom, as well as intersections of motherhood and academia. Her research has appeared in publications of Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Choral Journal, International Journal of Music Education: Research, Journal of Research in Music Education and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. She has authored chapters within The Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education (2014) and The Oxford Handbook of Care in Music Education. Dr. Sweet was initiated as a Friend of the Arts to the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity (2021). She is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Bulletin of the Council of Research in Music Education, International Journal of Research in Choral Music, Journal of Research in Music Education, and Qualitative Research in Music Education.

Mezzo-soprano Beth Ray Westlund is an active performer, teacher, clinician, and scholar. Dr. Ray earned the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees at the University of Texas at Austin. She is associate professor of music at her alma mater Luther College, where she teaches studio voice, diction, opera scenes, Body Mapping, and serves as Associate Department Head. Previous to this, she was assistant professor of voice at Ithaca College School of Music in Ithaca, New York. An article based on her doctoral treatise, “Dominick Argento’s Casa Guidi: A Character and Musical Study” appeared in Journal of Singing. Dr. Ray has given multiple presentations of her 2010 sabbatical research on the dramatic context surrounding operatic arias of G.F. Handel. She has long been interested in incorporating elements of performance psychology, mindfulness, Alexander Technique, and anatomically sound use of the body in her teaching. Her current research focus is Body Mapping for musicians, a method for improving the quality of physical movement in order to enhance performance and avoid injury. She was licensed in 2018 as a Body Mapping Educator, through the Association for Body Mapping Education.

Janet was an opera and concert singer from 1960-1990, always involved in vocal health and rehabilitation. She took several Alexander Technique workshops with Barbara and Bill Conable.
Her primary focus is teaching “What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body,”™ including an expanded 15-hour workshop for Choral Conductors given in late June for license renewal credit. She has given several WES workshops of various lengths for NATS chapters around the country. As Associate Professor Emerita on the music faculty of Iowa State University, she continues to teach Body Mapping as an integral part of her voice teaching. Janet has also taught the “What Every Musician” course at flute conferences and to the music faculty of ISU. She continues to work with individual musicians. Janet is also one of ABME’s Sponsoring Teachers.

Mezzo soprano Quinn Patrick Ankrum is an active performer, teacher, and scholar. She takes
an avid interest in Musicians’ Health and Wellness; not only is she a Licensed Body Mapping
Educator, but she has also been a student of the Alexander Technique since 1998. She has
presented short Body Mapping workshops for various instrumental studios, voice studios, and
choral ensembles over the years, and in 2017 presented “Body Mapping in the Choral
Classroom” for the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference. She currently serves
as Assistant Professor on the Voice Faculty at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory
of Music, where she teaches both classical and musical theatre students, coaches vocal
chamber music, teaches courses in graduate diction, is a trained facilitator for CCM’s Mind-
Body Medicine course, and is an active participant in the Center for Integrative Health and
Wellness for Musicians. A member of the Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble, she also teaches at the
Cincinnati Voice Institute (a summer training program for young singers and collaborative
pianists).
A performer for many years, Ankrum has collaborated with pianist Elizabeth Avery since 2007,
and the duo champion the works of living American composers; they are co-creators of Living
Song Project, a unique online database that promotes the art song and vocal chamber music of
living American composers. In addition, they recently premiered a commissioned song cycle by
Oregon-based composer Lisa Neher, No One Saves the Earth from Us but Us, which they plan to
take on tour in future seasons.
Ankrum has performed a wide variety of repertoire spanning the centuries, in a multitude of
venues throughout the United States and abroad. Favorite roles include Rosina (Il barbiere di
Siviglia), Cenerentola (La Cenerentola), Zerlina (Le nozze di Figaro), Meg (Adamo’s Little
Women), and Maddalena (Rigoletto). Equally at home on the concert stage, favorite works
include Bach’s Mass in b minor, Mozart’s Mass in c minor, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden
Gesellen, and Handel’s Messiah. Recent seasons have included Handel’s Messiah with the
Lubbock Symphony Orchestra; Luciano Berio’s Folksongs, William Walton’s Façade, and
Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with ensembles at the University of Cincinnati,
College-Conservatory of Music; recitals in Ohio, Oklahoma, and New York (Fredonia); and
programs of works from the Oratorio and American song repertoire in the Lorn Live Chamber
Music Festival (Oban, Scotland), and in the inaugural Sing Northumbria Festival in Northern
England. She performs an eclectic repertoire regularly in the Cincinnati area with harpsichordist
and organist Michael Unger.
Ankrum received degrees from Trinity University in San Antonio (BM, MAT), the University of
Colorado at Boulder (MM) and the University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music (DMA).
She was a Young Artist in the Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artists Program and the
Baltimore Opera Studio, and participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing
(NATS) Intern Program. She has been a finalist and winner in numerous regional and national
competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions (Rocky Mountain
Region) and the NATS Artist Awards competition (2nd place winner, 2006). Before she joined
the faculty of the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, she served on the
faculties of SUNY Fredonia (New York), Nazareth College (Rochester, NY), and Texas Tech
University (Lubbock).

Jeanne has maintained her own piano studio for forty years. She has specialized in teaching at the preparatory level, pre-schoolers through high school students, as well as coaching piano teachers. Jeanne has adjudicated for the National Guild of Piano Teachers for thirty-five years and holds permanent professional certification through the Music Teachers National Association in both piano and music history.
She has taught the six-hour course “What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body” to high school students as well as amateur and professional pianists. Bridget has been involved in somatic disciplines for nearly thirty years. In 1998, she was the first person (with colleague Jeanne Hansen) to become a Licensed Body Mapping Educator under the direction of Barbara Conable. In 2019 ABME awarded her the prestigious Barbara Conable Teaching Award. She is the author of Body Mapping for Music Ministers (GIA) and is the founder of the Choral Mapping program (choralmapping.com).
In addition to being an experienced Body Mapping teacher, consultant and presenter, she is the full-time Director of Music at St. Matthew Parish in Akron, Ohio where she is the principal musician and directs two choirs. She also maintains a small private piano studio and is a sought-after accompanist in the Northeast Ohio area, working with individual soloists, high school choirs and community theaters. Flutist Kelly Wilson has nine years of teaching experience in the instrumental music department of the Wooster City Schools in Wooster, OH. While at Wooster, her responsibilities included directing the Freshman Band, assisting with 200+ member High School Marching Band, teaching fifth and sixth grade woodwinds, and coaching middle school girls basketball and volleyball. Kelly teaches private flute lessons out of her home and welcomes Body Mapping students of all ages and abilities. MaryJean Allen has taught Body Mapping since 2000, and she is also a certified Alexander Technique teacher. MaryJean travels often to teach her unique Body Mapping and Alexander Technique workshops to musicians, actors, dancers, and people from all walks of life. She is co-author of the Body Mapping book for singers, "What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body," through Plural Publishing. The fourth edition was published in 2020. MaryJean has presented her workshops at Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Aquinas College, and the following Universities: Northwestern, Miami-Ohio, Texas Women’s, Chicago, Evansville, Northeastern Illinois, Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and Illinois Wesleyan. Rebecca Hunter is an active educator and performer new to the Ann Arbor, MI area. She served as Assistant Professor of Applied Violin and Violin Pedagogy at the University of South Carolina (2010-2015), and was the founding director of the Suzuki Strings at USC program.
She has taught at various music camps, festivals, Suzuki workshops and institutes, adjudicated festivals and competitions, and led master classes across the U.S. and abroad. She has given presentations at regional and national conferences through ASTA and MMC, and in Saint Lucia and Thailand.
As a performer, Rebecca has been a soloist with orchestras including the Chiang Mai Symphony and the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, and a section player with various orchestras including the Hallé Symphony and the Eugene Symphony.
Rebecca presently plays with the Flint Symphony Orchestra, is a part time lecturer at Eastern Michigan University, a member of the Ann Arbor Suzuki Institute, and is building a private studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a young Suzuki teacher and violinist, Judy became interested in the biomechanics of the bow arm, which eventually became the subject of her doctoral treatise. Her continuing passion for musicians’ wellness led her to teach courses in that area and finally to found the Musicians’ Wellness Team, comprised of health professionals and somatic practitioners, at Michigan State University. She now incorporates Body Mapping in all of her music education and wellness classes as well as in violin lessons with students of all ages.
Judy is published in such journals as American String Teacher, Music Educators Journal, and Medical Problems of Performing Artists. She is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences, including those of the American String Teachers Association and the Performing Arts Medicine Association. As a Licensed Body Mapping Educator, Melanie works with musicians to help prevent and recover from injury-producing movement and to maximize performance potential through the innovative technique of Body Mapping. She has given full-day workshops for the Arrowhead Music Teachers Association and the Chippewa Valley Music Teachers Association, as well as many customized/targeted workshops for varying groups including a Suzuki parent group and college technique courses. Melanie conducts the DS Concert Orchestra through the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra’s youth orchestras program, and is founder and director of the 20+ member community flute ensemble, North Wind Flute Choir.
As an active freelance musician, Melanie is a frequent principal sub for the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and teaches flute at the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) and in her private studio. She played with Northern Lights Music Festival in 2013 and 2014, and has performed with the United States Marine Corps Bands. Recent solo performances include guest soloist with UWS wind ensemble and orchestra, recitals for the University Recital Series at UWS, and the Music of Grace recital series at Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown. Her Latin American Duo with bassist and Columbian native, Nixon Bustos, performs educational and entertaining outreach concerts in schools, libraries, community centers, and private events.
Melanie was a judge for the inaugural UMFA Young Artists Competition in St. Paul, MN, and has over 30 years of private teaching experience. Rachel Ware Carlton, Assistant Professor of Voice and Interim Director of Graduate Music at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, WI, is an award-winning soprano who has performed on both the operatic and concert stage. Rachel has taught vocalists at the collegiate, secondary, and elementary levels. Her articles on vocal pedagogy, private studio management, and other topics have appeared in national publications.
Prior to joining the faculty at Silver Lake College, Rachel taught at Luther College in Decorah, IA and the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities Campus. The courses she taught included Applied Voice, 20th Century Music History, Class Voice, and Introduction to Opera. At Silver Lake College, she teaches Applied Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Diction, Vocal Literature, and Opera Workshop.
Rachel conducted a major survey of vocal pedagogues to assess the current use of science and imagery in vocal studios, and published her findings in the Journal of Singing. She has presented these findings at the CMS National Convention, the CMS Great Lakes Regional Conference, the Voice Foundation’s 40th Annual Symposium, and at the Phenomenon of Singing Symposium held in Newfoundland, Canada.
