A Violinist in Fiddle-Land: What Learning a New Style Taught Me about My Body Map

Lauren Smee

Handout

Note that not every session will have a hand out.

As a classically trained violinist I have always wanted to fiddle and during the pandemic I finally did it. The process of learning a whole new way of playing helped me understand the difference between mapping and technique in a new way. Mapping new techniques clarified my map in ways that ended up helping my classically playing too. And throughout this process I had to challenge my biases about fiddle technique as I quickly discovered my classical technique wasn't sufficient in this new (to me) style of playing. Mapping gave me the tools to analyze the movements of fiddle players and figure out the benefits of different technical choices. I offer this journey with the hope that it will be useful to musicians of any instrument who want to learn a new style, or for LBMEs who may be teaching musicians playing a different style on the same instrument.
