Stephen Caplan Stephen Caplan is Professor of Oboe at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also serves as Principal Oboist of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the Sierra Winds. His solo recording of American music for the oboe, A Tree in Your Ear, has received international acclaim. He has been a featured soloist with a variety of orchestras including the New Orleans Philharmonic, Arctic Chamber Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic and Oregon Symphony. He has performed with many of classical music’s leading musicians such as Hilary Hahn, Jan de Gaetani, and Ransom Wilson. He has also played in orchestras accompanying superstars Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett and others.

Caplan’s oboe teaching is widely recognized. He has twice been a featured clinician for Nora Post’s “Oboe Blowout,” and has also been a featured artist and teacher for the California Double Reed Day and the Northwest Oboe Seminar. He has given workshops at music schools throughout the United States including Brigham Young University, Ohio State University, University of Michigan, University of Oregon, and University of Texas. He served on a Pedagogy Panel for the International Double Reed Society and has been featured many times as a recitalist at their annual conferences both in America and in Europe.

Caplan can be heard on numerous recordings as a soloist and as a member of Sierra Winds. He is a three-time recipient of the Nevada Arts Council’s Performing Artist Fellowship and has received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Caplan is an Artist for Rigoutat Oboe Manufacturers.

Stephen Caplan received a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University. He was awarded the MM and DMA degrees from the University of Michigan. His principal oboe teachers were Ray Still and Harry Sargous. His music making and teaching have also been significantly influenced by study with Arnold Jacobs, Marcel Moyse and Barbara Conable.

Caplan teaches a Body Mapping course at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has also given Body Mapping workshops for California Double Reed Day, Las Vegas Music Festival, Western Horn Symposium and the Nevada Music Educator’s Association.
