Soprano Michelle Kunz has memorably portrayed many of opera's most beloved heroines to critical acclaim, including Violetta (La Traviata), Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), Mimì ( La Bohème), Blanche de la Force (Dialogues of the Carmelites), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica) and Jenny Diver (The Threepenny Opera). She has sung in Los Angeles, Sun Valley, Salt Lake City, Saint Louis, Harrisburg, Washington, DC, New York, and Boston, and has been a featured artist at the La Gesse Festival in Toulouse, France, the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, and the Shaker Mountain Performing Arts Festival in the Berkshires. She has also represented The Washington Opera on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage for the Gala Open House Weekend.
Her oratorio work has been praised by The Washington Post as "polished and expressive," and her credits include Bach's Magnificat, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Beethoven's Mass in C Major , and a performance of Górecki's Ad matrem on the occasion of the composer's honorary degree convocation at The Catholic University of America. She has sung with the New Dominion Chorale, under the direction of Thomas Beveridge, in a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria. She has also appeared with the Washington Choral Ensemble in evenings of jazz and spirituals at the Embassy of New Zealand, and in performances of Buxtehude's Magnificat and Handel's Messiah.
Dr. Kunz is an engaging recitalist, and has performed at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Monticello, including a recital commissioned by the White House Historical Association in celebration of the White House bicentennial. She has sung at La Maison Française, and the embassies of Australia and Hungary. Dr. Kunz has been featured in two Polish music recitals in celebration of Polish Heritage Month and in a recital of Spanish music to celebrate Spanish Heritage Month at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC. She co-presented the songs of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter at the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum. She has appeared several times on the Odeon Chamber Music Series, most recently in a program of duets with mezzo soprano Kyle Engler and pianist Patrick O'Donnell.
Dr. Kunz holds her Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from The
Catholic University of America, where she also earned her Doctor of Musical
Arts degree in vocal performance. She has been on the voice faculties of the
Levine School of Music and the Washington National Cathedral and has taught
high school chorus at the Washington Waldorf School. She has also conducted
and directed numerous community and church choirs and musical theater
productions. She is a popular presenter on a variety of topics ranging from
Body Mapping to opera history and is in demand as artist-in-residence for a
variety of programs. Dr. Kunz is an active member of NATS and MTNA and her
students have placed in competitions sponsored by these and other
organizations. She is a regular contributor to Classical Singer magazine. In
addition to maintaining a private voice studio in Northern Virginia, she
sings regularly with the chorus of the Washington National Opera (on the
Kennedy Center's Opera House stage), where she also serves as the children's
chorus master.
