Constance E. Barrett, DMA, is a cellist and teacher active in the New York Metropolitan area. A frequent guest teacher at Suzuki Institutes, Chamber Music clinics, and in-service workshops specializing in composition, Improvised Chamber Music, and Body Mapping, Connie has co-facilitated workshops in improvisation with Grammy-nominated cellist David Darling through the organization, Music for People. A frequent contributor to the American String Teacher journal, Connie has written articles and contributed to columns on
teaching composition, improvisation, and rhythm to students.
She holds degrees in cello performance from Baldwin-Wallace College and the University of Notre Dame, certificates in cello and chamber music study from the Conservatoire Américain in Fontainebleau, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Ohio State University, where she was the graduate
teaching associate to William Conable, the discoverer of Body Mapping.
The press has called Connie "a musician of rare sensitivity" and cited her performance on the debut album of the pop duo Shimmerplanet as "haunting" and "beautiful." She has performed with a variety of musical groups and genres, from her performances on national network television with violinist Andy Stein and Camaraterie to her performances at the Berkshire Jazz Festival, Jacob's Pillow, and the BAM Café with sitarist Nana Simopoulos. She has also performed with harpsichordist Robert Conant and the award-winning Cavani String Quartet. Connie has
presented in the areas of composition and improvisation at the ASTA National Conference, the Suzuki National Conference, the Connecticut Music Educators Association, the Andover Educators' Body Mapping retreat, the New York State School Music Association, and the Ohio String Teachers Association. Connie has been on the faculties of Kenyon and Lafayette Colleges, Capital University, and Hackley School and is currently a String Specialist with the Greenwich, CT Public Schools.
